The BCWF’s Fish Habitat Restoration and Education Program invites you to join the 2022 Maple Ridge Fish Habitat Stewardship Workshop, hosted in partnership with the Alouette River Management Society. During this free 2-day workshop, participants will hear from guest speakers about the traditional use of the area, human impacts, and the importance of this area for native fish and wildlife. Participants will gain hands-on experience in areas such as riparian and stream health assessments (including fish habitat assessments), vegetation biodiversity surveys, water quality measurements and monitoring, and invertebrate sampling. In the second part of the workshop, held in the fall (date TBD), workshop participants will gain hands on experience removing invasive vegetation species near fish habitat and replanting riparian habitat with native trees and shrubs.

This workshop will feature a mix of demonstrations and talks from knowledgeable presenters including:

  • Larissa Lau, from the Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver, will do a site tour with participants to share knowledge about local invasive species to look out for, different treatment options and native plant alternatives, and to discuss the work that has been done to control Japanese knotweed in Maple Ridge and the Metro Vancouver area.
  • BCIT Staff will teach participants Fish Habitat Assessment Procedures (FHAP) used in BC and participants will complete an assessment on a side channel of the Alouette River.
